Here are 7 common sense guidelines to eliminate credit card debt:
- DO make a budget listing all your fixed expenses. Rent or mortgage, car insurance, car payments, cell phones, utilities, day care, fixed loans, etc. Then try to estimate a reasonable budget for discretionary items like food, drinks, dry cleaning, etc.

It will benefit you in the long term if you introduce some self control when it comes to overseeing your money. Practice self control, especially when it refers to dealing with your assets, so do your best and refrain from making the situation more difficult than it already is. With the surge in home foreclosures, homeowners have unfortunately had to resort to utilizing their credit cards to pay their monthly mortgage. Credit cards, although great to have in an emergency, are the bane of society. In our parents’ day, the rule of thumb was to pay with cash. If you couldn’t afford it, you couldn’t but it.
The credit crunch today has forced many well known banks to borrow money from the Federal Government. Here are some startling statistics: According to the Federal Reserve, for the year 2006-2007 the total US consumer debt was $2.46 trillion dollars. This is mainly credit card debt. Once your credit starts to slide, you will feel it! You may not even notice at first because you are still paying you rent, loans and groceries. As the debts mount, credit card payments and loans will become harder to manage. Even though it has been some time since I was in a similar position, I know just how it feels. Great responsibility comes with having a credit card but with the number of people who have a credit card at an all time high as with the spending it was obvious that the debts would soon follow. If your debt has been handed over to one of these agencies, you already have a black mark put on your credit report. However it is important to know your rights when it comes to being in debt. A credit union is a good organization that is for individuals based on where they live or where they are employed. It will work in the same ways as most banks but offer loans that are more exclusive to their members and offer a better and much lower interest rate. Those who deposit the money are able to borrow money because the members run it. This is the best place for someone to earn a stable paycheck but is somehow managed to accumulate bad credit because of sometimes the community will base it on their character and not on their creditability. The percentage of people who own at least one credit card increases every year but there again, credit card debt is also at a record high as well; making repayments is becoming difficult for a large number of people.
